CETAG Strike: Teachers Association Defies Appeals, Vows to Continue Strike

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its ongoing strike action, despite urgent appeals from stakeholders to reconsider its demands. This decision was made at a meeting held on January 7, 2025, following an earlier stakeholders' meeting on January 3, 2025, at the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

During the GTEC meeting, CETAG was urged to reevaluate certain aspects of its strike, particularly those unrelated to teaching. However, after careful deliberation, the National Council of CETAG unanimously resolved to proceed with the strike until all outstanding payments are received by its members.

In a statement, the National Council declared, "CETAG will continue the strike in the manner stated in our earlier declaration to all stakeholders until all monies are paid into our accounts." This stance demonstrates the association's determination to secure fair compensation for its members.

To reinforce its position, the Council has directed the National Executive Officer (NEO) to issue a follow-up communication to all zones and locals, reiterating the core demands of the strike and urging members to remain resolute.

With Colleges of Education scheduled to begin their 2024/2025 academic year activities on January 13, 2025, the ongoing strike is likely to cause significant disruptions. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are anxiously awaiting a resolution to the impasse.

It's worth noting that CETAG has previously suspended its strike in September 2023, after a majority vote by its members.¹ However, the current situation appears more complex, with the association remaining steadfast in its demands.
